A 26-year-old mother allegedly intoxicated crashed her car into an irrigation canal, leaving her 4-year-old daughter to drown while she reportedly went home to shower.
On March 8, Juliette Marie Acosta, 26, left her car submerged after colliding with an irrigation canal near Modesto, California. Her daughter, Reagan Herrin, a 4-year-old girl, drowned in the accident.
Acosta was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred. Her daughter was strapped into her car seat at the time.
The suspect was reportedly found “taking a shower while her daughter remained in danger at the crash site,” according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.
The girl’s uncle helped retrieve Reagan from the car when police arrived. The child was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away the following day.
Acosta’s attorney, Gil Somera, denied that his client showered after the crash.
“In terms of the timeline, it’s nearly impossible for her to have done both,” said Gil Somera, Acosta’s attorney, disputing claims that she showered after the accident.
“It’s not feasible to shower while your daughter is drowning, especially when the site is a canal and not next door to a house. Logically, that simply doesn’t make sense,” Somera told *The Independent*.
Acosta has been charged with driving under the influence, homicide, and other offenses.
