A couple of passengers who had their luggage lost are being sued by Air Canada for spending the equivalent of $2,100 on clothing. They lost their bags on a flight from Toronto to Vancouver.
Alaa and Nancy Tannous were sued by Air Canada after spending $2,100 on clothing following the loss of their luggage on a flight from Toronto to Vancouver in 2022.
The airline informed the couple that their bags had not arrived and that they could not say what had happened to them. “They couldn’t even track the luggage, whether it was in Toronto or on its way,” Alaa told CBC.
The two spent over $2,000 on clothes and submitted the receipts to request a reimbursement from Air Canada, which offered only $174. The couple refused the airline’s offer.
The case was taken to the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), which ruled that the airline should pay approximately $1,677. However, in December 2024, the couple was surprised with a lawsuit from the company.
“It was a shock,” Alaa said after being notified. “It’s disappointing to see the airline, after all the money I’ve spent with them over the years, appeal a compensation of just $2,000.”
The airline claimed that the luggage was returned to the couple in less than 24 hours and that part of the amount spent was used on items purchased days after the bags were returned to the Tannous.
“Air Canada chose to take the matter to court to clarify what constitutes reasonable expenses that customers can claim,” the company said in a statement.
