April Schmitt, who was coming back from Los Angeles, noticed the missing gem while already on her way home and decided to immediately return to the airport to try and recover it.
With the help of the airport staff, a team of six maintenance workers launched a thorough search inside the baggage carousel, despite the complex structure filled with steel, belts, and motors.
After 90 minutes without success, Schmitt left feeling discouraged, but the workers promised to continue the search through the following shifts.
Hours later, engineer Sean Dempsey found the diamond after spotting a glimmer while scanning with a flashlight and improvised tools. The passenger was surprised and moved by the team’s dedication, praising the staff’s care and empathy, saying they went above and beyond to help her.
For engineer Tom Riordan, who led the effort, a passenger’s smile is reward enough.
