Vietnamese-American pilot Anh-Thu Nguyen, globally recognized as one of only 10 women in history to fly solo around the world, died in a plane crash on July 30 in the state of Indiana, United States.

Nguyen, aged 44, was flying alone in a small aircraft that crashed in a field near the Nest Event Center, shortly after taking off from Indy South Greenwood Airport in Greenwood. She was the sole occupant of the aircraft.

The Greenwood Fire Department confirmed her identity, and federal authorities from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have already begun investigations to determine the cause of the accident.

Hours before the incident, Nguyen had shared on her social media plans to fly from Indiana to Pennsylvania.

Besides her remarkable career as a pilot, Nguyen was also a Boeing 767 pilot and founder of the nonprofit organization Asian Women in Aerospace and Aviation (AWAA), which promotes representation and support for Asian women in the aerospace and aviation industries.

The death of Anh-Thu Nguyen represents a significant loss for the global aviation community, especially for her inspiring role in promoting diversity and female empowerment in the aviation sector.
