This terrible incident occurred despite the national state of emergency, a measure implemented by the government of Daniel Noboa to curb the activities of organized crime syndicates. This is the first murder reported since the government declared the internal armed conflict and state of emergency.
Brigitte García was a member of the Revolución Ciudadana party of former President Rafael Correa, a young and promising figure in local politics, who won the local elections in San Vicente, in the north of Manabí, representing the Revolución Ciudadana. She became the youngest mayor of the country at the age of 26. Unfortunately, she was murdered at the age of 27.

Jairo Loor, the Communications Director of the Manabita municipality, was also a victim of this violent attack. The tragic news was confirmed by Loor’s mother. Both were found in an SUV with license plates PDQ – 4871.

Investigators dismissed the possibility of robbery as the belongings of the victims were found at the scene. The mayor was seated in the passenger seat at the time of the attack.

Commander of the police in Zone 4, Emerson Ubidia, revealed that relatives of the victims had reported since Saturday morning that they did not know their whereabouts. At the crime scene, located at Punta Napo Beach, four ballistic traces were found, including bullets and casings. Surprisingly, there were no previous reports of threats against the victims, and the mayor also did not have police protection.
