Airport staff sued for $1.2 million by British Airways after 9kg of gold jewelry goes missing.
British Airways is suing two employees at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport for $1.2 million after 9kg of gold jewelry went missing. The airline had been contracted by Al-Arefi Jewelry to transport the valuable items.
The incident occurred in July 2023. The jewelry was supposed to be transported from Bahrain to Chicago, USA.
Valued at over $400,000, the jewelry is suspected to have disappeared while baggage handlers were working on the plane.
Al-Arefi Jewelry sought compensation for the missing jewelry. In a February 2024 trial in Bahrain, it was determined that British Airways should pay $406,000 to the jeweler.
In January 2025, the airline filed a lawsuit against the baggage handling company Ground Services International (GSI), part of dnata, seeking $1.2 million in damages.
British Airways claims that GSI failed to comply with the Standard Ground Handling Agreement. The lawsuit covers the amount to be paid to Al-Arefi Jewelry, as well as losses and legal fees.
According to Business Insider, a settlement conference has been scheduled for February 11.
