Barbara Dunn, president of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators, told the Wall Street Journal that there are many factors that influence survival conditions during a crash.
“The way the aircraft lands and where the passenger is sitting impacts survival. If you tighten your seatbelt well, it reduces uncontrolled body movement. It also depends on whether the passenger can assume the brace position,” Dunn explained.
She explained that in some plane accidents, being near an emergency exit can be a determining factor for survival.
Ed Galea, a fire safety engineering professor and aircraft evacuation expert, told CNN, “There is no magic seat that is the safest.”
“It all depends on the nature of the crash. Sometimes, it’s better to be in the front, sometimes in the back,” he concluded.
