Matthew Terrell Collins Sr., 58, and his son, Matthew Terrell Collins Jr., 29, were killed by a falling tree during a storm at Bull Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Georgia, on Sunday (6).

A violent storm swept through the Bull Creek Golf Course area in Columbus, Georgia, on Sunday (6). Matthew Terrell Collins Sr. and his son, Matthew Terrell Collins Jr., died after a tree fell on their golf cart.

The father and son were seeking shelter from the intense weather activity under a tree. Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed that their deaths were caused by “crush trauma.”

Meredith Wyatt, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, attributed the intense storm to a cold front passing through the region, according to USA Today.

“The cold front either slowed down or stalled completely as it moved through, with nothing to push it entirely out of our area,” said Wyatt, adding that meteorologists are gathering more data on the storm.

Dustin Longnion, a friend of Matthew’s, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the family with funeral expenses. He wrote about the father-son bond on the fundraising page.

“He had a deep bond with his father, and losing both so suddenly is a devastating blow to everyone who knew and loved them,” Longnion wrote.

“Marty, the girls, and I are deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of two Georgians in Muscogee County today as a result of severe weather,” Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on Facebook.
