Dramatic video shows firefighters rescuing a man and his dog trapped on a frozen lake in the village of Wellesley, Boston, Massachusetts.
Ed Berger and his dog Tommy were at Lake Waban in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, when the dog ran onto the frozen water chasing birds. Firefighters from Wellesley carried out the rescue of both.
A video published by the Fire Department shows the moment firefighters reached Berger in the middle of the frozen lake. The rescuers then returned to save Tommy.
The footage, captured by a drone, shows rescuers lying on the ice to pull the victims from the freezing water. One officer lifted Berger from below, allowing him to place his chest on the ice without breaking it.
If Berger had tried to support himself with his hands, the ice would have collapsed, potentially leading to a much more dangerous situation.
In an interview, Berger, who is a paramedic, praised the firefighters’ efforts in saving him and his dog Tommy.
Both Berger and his dog were taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia and have fully recovered.
