Former Chilean President Sebastián Piñera Dies in Helicopter Crash at 74

The accident occurred this Tuesday in the locality of Lago Ranco, in the interior of Chile, where Sebastián Piñera, 74, was spending his vacation in a family summer house.

According to La Nación, Piñera owned the aircraft, and three other occupants of the helicopter managed to survive the crash.


CNN Chile reports that it was raining in the area at the time of the aircraft’s crash. “Clarín” states that Piñera was piloting the helicopter and was unable to unbuckle his seatbelt to escape the aircraft.

His sister, brother-in-law, and a child were reportedly able to exit the aircraft and are doing well, according to preliminary local media reports.

Piñera leaves behind a fortune estimated at $2.7 billion.
