A travel influencer recorded the moment passengers aboard the Ocean Explorer cruise ship, from Quark Expeditions, witnessed giant 12-meter waves hitting the vessel. The video went viral on social media.

Travel influencer Lesley Anne Murphy shared a video on March 26 on her Instagram showing a group of passengers struggling to stand as the Ocean Explorer ship navigates 12-meter waves in Antarctica.

The Quark Expeditions cruise ship was crossing the Drake Passage, a strait located in the far south of Antarctica, known for its extremely adverse conditions for navigation.

Murphy was returning to Ushuaia, Argentina, with a group of 20 women as part of her LimitLes retreat program. The trip began on March 17.

“I love adrenaline, so I really enjoyed it. I stayed there for a while with my phone in hand, filming what was happening right in front of us,” she said to USA TODAY.

The video shows passengers rolling and trying to maintain their balance as the strong waves hit the Ocean Explorer. Despite the intensity and the frightening size, the influencer felt safe throughout the journey.

“Quark Expeditions has over 30 years of experience navigating polar waters with a specialized fleet and an experienced crew,” a company spokesperson told USA TODAY.

No crew members or passengers aboard the Ocean Explorer were injured in the event.
