The dog owner, who had hired a domestic helper to take care of his home and pet while he was at work, initially believed that Boyboy had died peacefully in his sleep. However, the terrible reality came to light when he decided to review the CCTV footage of his residence.
The recordings showed the domestic helper brutally attacking the dog with an improvised bat, leading to the animal’s painful death. According to Tan, the woman could be heard in the footage repeatedly telling the dog to wait, while continuing to assault it.
Immediately after the discovery, Boyboy’s owner reported the incident to the local police, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), and the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS), seeking justice for his beloved pet.
In Singapore, animal cruelty is a serious crime. According to the Straits Times, first-time offenders found guilty of animal cruelty can face fines of up to S$15,000 (approximately US$8,800), imprisonment of up to 18 months, or both. For repeat offenders, the penalties can be doubled, resulting in a fine of up to S$30,000 (about US$17,600) and/or imprisonment of up to three years.
