Thousands of coastal residents are being instructed to evacuate 100 meters away from the coast due to fears of a tsunami after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 30 km around 10:37 PM (local time), about 13 kilometers northeast of the municipality of Hinatuan in the Surigao del Sur province on the island of Mindanao, according to the United States Geological Service.


Thousands of people have been evacuated in Japan amid fears of a tsunami moments after a major earthquake hit the Philippines in the early hours of the morning.

Japan ordered the evacuation of coastal residents in several areas, including Ishigaki, the Miyako islands, and the city of Futtsu. A tsunami is considered a real possibility after the “powerful earthquake” occurred at 12:37 PM (Chamorro Standard Time, Chamorro time zone).

The National Weather Service of Guam said: “A magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in Minadao, Philippines, at 12:37 PM (Brasilia time). There is a threat of tsunami for the Republic of Palau at this time.
