Beijing is on high alert as the tropical storm Doksuri hit the Chinese capital on its way north, killing two people and forcing at least 31,000 people to flee their homes.
The districts of Fengtai, Shijingshan, Haidian, Daxing, and Huairou reported flooded roads, with services suspended on hundreds of bus lines and several train routes throughout the city, according to the state news agency Xinhua.
Three trains were stranded on their way to Beijing, according to media reports.
The storm also forced Beijing International Airport to cancel 40 flights. (Watch the video)
Doksuri hit the coast as a typhoon in southeastern China on Friday morning, causing landslides and floods in Fujian province before heading north to bring heavy rains to Beijing and its neighboring provinces.
Although such storms are common in southeastern China in summer, it is unusual for them to affect the north of the country.
On Saturday night, the National Meteorological Center upgraded its national storm warning to red, the highest in China’s four-tier weather alert system. It is the second red storm warning issued since 2011.
Beijing’s meteorological authorities maintained a red alert for storms on Monday. Beijing’s hydrological station also issued a red alert for floods.
