Northern China is experiencing record rainfall.

As of 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Beijing had recorded an average rainfall of 257.9 mm, with an urban average of 235.1 mm. In Mentougou and Fangshan, the average rainfall reached 470.2 mm and 414.6 mm, respectively.

By Tuesday afternoon, about 45,000 people in 13 districts of the capital were severely affected, and 127,000 were evacuated. Economic losses are being calculated, according to city officials.

According to the assessment, the intensity of the rain far exceeded the level of July 21, 2012, when 79 lives were taken in Beijing, half of them in the Fangshan district.

Peak rainfall recorded over 700 mm at two weather stations, while the peak of the 2012 rains was 541 mm. Beijing is stepping up disaster relief efforts, employing People’s Liberation Army helicopters to drop essential supplies and transfer stranded residents.
