Many of the victims were enjoying summer vacations in the popular coastal region when they were surprised by the rapid advance of the flames. The situation is exacerbated by an intense heatwave sweeping through the region, with temperatures reaching extreme marks of up to 40 degrees Celsius.
The fires have already consumed more than 26 thousand hectares of vegetation, making it one of the most devastating forest fires recorded in the country. The Chilean government and local authorities are on high alert, trying to combat the flames and provide assistance to the victims and affected areas.
