The animal had escaped in the middle of the afternoon from a circus on Viale Mediterraneo, in the Cerreto area.

The lion then wandered through the city streets frightening residents, videos posted on social media show the lion walking calmly through the streets

The city’s mayor used Facebook to alert the population: “The circus staff is implementing capture operations, with the support of the police who promptly intervened on the spot. Pay maximum attention and avoid traveling until further notice…”

For hours, several veterinarians from the local health authority patrolled the city streets armed with tranquilizer rifles, looking for the right place to position themselves to hit the animal.

Around 10 p.m., the feline was seen staggering in the Cerreto area due to the effect of the sedative it had been shot with. The circus from which it escaped is just over 500 meters away.

In view of the case, the Civitavecchia Public Prosecutor’s Office, as anticipated by some bodies, will initiate an investigation.
