A kayaker was fishing in the sea in New Zealand when he started being chased by a great white shark. The video went viral on social media.

Fisherman Matt Wells was in his kayak in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, when he recorded the moment he started being chased by a great white shark. The video reached more than 2.3 million views.

Wells was hoping to catch a yellowtail fish at the beginning of the recording, but he noticed something bigger in the water. Shadows took shape, and as the animal approached the surface, the fisherman panicked.

“Great white, great white. There’s a huge great white behind me. Please don’t attack me, bro,” he said as he paddled faster.

He became more desperate when he lost sight of the large predator. “Please keep me safe, protect me, and get this shark away from me,” he pleaded.

After safely reaching home, the fisherman gave an interview to the “Today” show about his wild encounter.

“It was a whirlwind of emotions all at once. I was terrified, shocked, excited, and, well, just amazed at the size of the animal I had just seen,” he described.

Despite the scare, Wells believes the shark wasn’t hunting him.

“They can attack, but they’re curious animals above all else, and I actually think it just wanted to scare me a little and have some fun,” he joked.
