The police turned on their lights to approach the driver, but he sped up, the police said.

The high-speed driver continued north on Tenth Avenue with police in pursuit, but he ended up hitting a Hyundai Elantra and, out of control, swerved to the left, hitting a pillar of an above-ground subway line.

The police managed to remove the 22-year-old man from the vehicle before the SUV burst into flames with the passenger still inside, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Passenger Tiana Rodríguez was declared dead by EMS.

The Lamborghini driver was taken into custody, the police said, but had not been charged as of Tuesday. The investigation was ongoing.
