The vehicle was sinking in a lake in Naperville, on the outskirts of Chicago. Footage from the recording shows the officers breaking the car window to reach the family, including a two-year-old child who was visibly terrified.

The remarkable rescue was triggered by an accident in which the SUV driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. The officers managed to overcome the challenges of the situation and received praise for their heroic act. Both the family and one of the rescuers received medical treatment after the accident.
